Shiny Side Up Or Shiny Side Down?

Brains – they're complicated things aren't they? Well, not mine – it's pretty simple to be honest. But sometimes the most pointless things can keep me awake at night.

For example, just the other night there was no way I was getting to sleep due to the fact I was thinking about tin foil – yes you read it right – TIN FOIL kept me awake!

Why? Well, I did my sandwiches for work the night before like I always try to do, but instead of wrapping them in cling film I used foil. Noting wrong with that I hear you say, and you're correct – absolutely nothing wrong with it.

But for some reason I asked myself the question "Shiny side up or shiny side down?” And it was bugging me all night. So I posted the question on Facebook. And 15 responses later I got this message:

Shine up... reflects heat off it so up if you're putting it on a grill pan or cooking potato wedges on it... The dull side absorbs the heat so if you are wrapping something in it like a chicken breast or jacket potato then you put it dull side on the outside!

I didn't realise it was that technical, but at least I now know and can sleep easy tonight.

Now – do you iron your clothes inside out or not?……..

It Came, We Saw, It Went!

What a weekend – we got the first (and probably last) glimpse of Summer. Yep, 48 hours of back to back sunshine and no sign of a hosepipe ban...yet!

But one thing that always makes me laugh in the UK is no matter what the temperature is, there's always some people out with their shorts on. Let's be honest it wasn't that warm – my car temperature gauge registered up to 17 degrees, but clearly for some people that was hot enough to get their pasty white legs out and offend my eyes! And some people were even walking round with their tops off and beer guts hanging out – save it for the beach on the Costa Del Sol please!

I've had an idea to stop all of this – there should be a new law brought in, a law that states that people can only wear shorts if the weather hits the magic 20 degrees Celsius, and there's not a cloud in the sky! People who fail to adhere to that should be issued with an on the spot fine and sent to the nearest clothes shop to buy a pair of jeans!

Hope you enjoyed the Summer – it'll be back for a day or two next year!

D.I. WHY?!

Last week I had my first week off in absolutely ages. I had no plans for the week, and the diary was completely clear. So I thought; "What shall I do?”

The answer… …D.I.Y – well actually kind of. I put some tiles on the kitchen wall (well my Dad did) back in September. My task was simple – to do the grouting. My kitchen is about the size of a cereal box, so there wasn’t a huge amount to do. But somehow by March I still hadn’t finished the grouting. So the one plan I did end up making was to finish it… …but I didn’t!

It was day two of my week off and at around lunch time I decided to get it done. The job would have taken a couple of hours at the most, but before Oli had finished the 1 o’clock Takeover I was bored and I gave up!

So a whole week off with nothing to do and I still couldn’t find the time to finish a simple task… …oh well, maybe I’ll get it finished when I’ve got another holiday in August!

Our Survey Said... ..Custard Cream!

If you listen to the show regularly you'll know that I can't get enough of talking about pointless surveys. Well this one is even more pointless than the one about your favourite colour – it's about your favourite biscuit!

Yep, the humble Custard Cream has taken the title of Britain's most loved biscuit! 6000 people were surveyed and the majority of people praised it for being fun to eat! And I've got to admit I completely understand where folks are coming from with this.

There's various ways to eat one – you can eat it whole as it's just the right size to fit in your mouth (having said that I could do the same with a Wagon Wheel)! Or the way I tend to do it is bite the top off, lick the cream off and then dunk the rest in my tea – perfect!

So here's to the Custard Cream – one of life's simple pleasures and much more fun to eat than a Digestive!

I've Finally Done It!

From listening to the show you're probably aware that I'm not a big fan of doing the household chores. But following on from my last blog, I seem to be putting my OCD to good use.

Last time it was the vacuuming, which may I add I'm still doing a lot – those 300 air watts haven't let me down yet! But now my OCD seems to have transferred just a bit.... ...to the ironing board.

Now, I hate ironing to the point that if I were the Prime Minister I'd have it outlawed, but for some reason I've really got into the groove of it recently. There was a pile the size of Mount Everest in the cupboard under the stairs at home, and it had been there since mid September. But somehow on Monday night I got through it and found t-shirts I forgot I owned.

So since the turn of the year, I've vacuumed a lot, ironed stacks, and I think next week I might just have a wash!

OCD???

I'm ever so slightly concerned – not about the state of the economy or about any of the other big issues in the world... ...no, I'm more concerned about myself. I think I may well be in the early stages of developing an obsessive compulsive disorder for cleaning. Well, more vacuuming.

You see the thing is I've got a lightly coloured carpet, and the problem with that is it shows every small speck of dust. Lately for whatever reason I've not been able to deal with seeing that, whereas previously, house proud I wasn't!

So, every morning and evening for the last couple of weeks I've had the vacuum cleaner out whether I've needed to or not. But now it's become part of my daily routine. You're probably thinking "Why aren't there more men like you Mark?” Whereas I'm thinking I really need to snap out of it.

Something somewhere must have triggered this obsession, but what? Well it could be the fact that I bought my 300 air watts of suction a few weeks ago, so there's the novelty aspect. Or it could be that my parents came round a while ago without warning, but with a load of cleaning products and suddenly I'm liking this clean living lark.

Whatever it is, I'm sure my neighbours would like it to stop, and soon... ..after all I do sometimes like to get up at 5am. What is it they say, and hour in the morning is worth two at night – sorry neighbours, I'll get help, and soon!
